Boat travel is part of the experience
The boat is not just transportation. It is how you perceive scale, distance, wind, and changing landscapes.
Freshwater beaches, sandbanks revealed by the falling river, forest on the horizon, and a culture that is not a backdrop but a living presence. This page brings together context, itinerary ideas, and practical steps to turn inspiration into a real trip.
Alter do Chão lies within the municipality of Santarém, on the banks of the Tapajós River. Geography, however, explains only part of it. The experience is shaped by water, forest, sand, boat journeys, communities, and the river’s own rhythm.
This is not a trip for rushing through checklists. It is a journey of crossings, beaches, conversations, regional food, silence, and sunsets that change color without warning.
Ilha do Amor is the name given to the sandbank in front of the village. The crossing is short, but the landscape changes with the river level — and that variation is part of the destination’s identity.
River levels define the landscape. Rather than looking for one fixed answer, understand what each season offers and confirm conditions close to departure.
In the second half of the year, the sandbanks usually become more prominent. Timing and intensity vary each year.
With higher waters, the destination changes: boat travel and flooded-forest scenery become more prominent.
This allows time for the village, beaches, rivers, and cultural experiences without turning the trip into a race.
Staying in the village makes sunsets, the Ilha do Amor crossing, and the overall experience easier to enjoy.
The destination comes alive when the itinerary combines scenery, movement, culture, and free time.
The boat is not just transportation. It is how you perceive scale, distance, wind, and changing landscapes.
Prioritize experiences led by residents, guides, and communities who understand the local rhythm.
Leave room in your schedule to do nothing but watch the light change over the river.
A balanced structure for a first trip. Excursions and sequencing should be adjusted to river levels, weather, and local operations.

Free morning, a relaxed lunch, and return to Santarém according to flight time.
Because arrival and departure for Alter do Chão pass through Santarém, it is worth setting aside one or two days to explore the city, walk along the waterfront, visit the historic center, and enjoy Amazonian cuisine at a slower pace.

If your flight arrives early, consider spending a night in Santarém before continuing to Alter. On the return, the city works well as a gentle final stop, with a waterfront walk, relaxed lunch, market, and sunset.
With limited time, combine the waterfront, historic center, and an unhurried late afternoon. With two days, add a market, a city walk, and one cultural or culinary stop without treating Santarém as just a connection.

Before reaching Alter, Santarém already offers an excellent introduction to Amazonian flavors. Markets, buffets, and restaurants reveal the region’s abundance with more context and less rush.
Santarém is more than a transit point. The city introduces visitors to a distinct Amazonian aesthetic, with broad rivers, giant water lilies, the Meeting of the Waters, and a direct relationship between urban life and nature.

Santarém Airport (STM) is the most practical gateway to Alter do Chão. From there, the roughly 35 km road journey to the village takes around 40 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic and stops.
When cultural events are scheduled, it is worth including a performance or local celebration. Even without a formal program, Santarém’s use of streets, squares, and waterfront reveals the city’s spirit.

Flights and accommodation deserve advance planning. Excursions should be booked with reliable local operators and reconfirmed according to river conditions.
